Aktivitäten 2017

• Wir waren im März zu einem Gespräch im Auswärtigen Amt und im April lud uns der Vorsitzende des Ausschusses für Menschenrechte und humanitäre Hilfe des Bundestags ein, um den Verein und sein Anliegen vorzustellen. Auch bei der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung waren wir zu einem interessanten Gespräch eingeladen.
•  Wir haben Ilham Tohti für den Václav Havel Human Rights Prize 2017 und für den Menschenrechtspreis der Stadt Weimar vorgeschlagen.
• Am 25. Oktober 2017 findet in Palma de Mallorca eine Cineforum-Veranstaltung zu Ilham Tohti statt.

• Anlässlich der Vergabe des Citizen Power Awards der Initiatives for China an Ilham Tohti führte The Liberty Web am 16. November 2017 in Tokio ein ausführliches Interview mit Enver Can: http://eng.the-liberty.com/2017/7027/

• Am  30. November 2017 erhält Ilham Tohti den Liberal International Prize for Freedom bei der Sitzung des Liberal Internaltional Human Rights Committee in Den Haag.
• Am 10. Dezember 2017 erhält Ilham Tohti im Rahmen einer Festveranstaltung im Weimarer Stadtschloss den Menschenrechtspreis der Stadt Weimar.
• Während der letzten Monate sammelte ITI Unterschriften für die Nominierung Ilham Tohtis für den Friedensnobelpreis 2018.

Brief an den Dalai Lama: Bitte um Friedensnobelpreisnominierung

Your Holiness,
Dear Dalai Lama,

 Some three decades ago when I had the honor to welcome you at Munich Airport, Your Holiness told me:

 "Never give up hope".

 As a young man with a lot of hope, I tried to understand what you really meant. Thus, after 30 years and now in my late-60s, I am still hopeful that one day justice will prevail and tyranny will end.

 But, on the other hand, the plight of the Uyghur and the Tibetan people has NOT gotten any better. On the contrary, it is getting worse every day.

 The Chinese Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo died in custody recently and a Uyghur scholar, Ilham Tohti, has been condemned to a sentence of life imprisonment. And this just for wanting peace and harmony among all ethnic groups in China as well as the implementation of the existing autonomy laws.

 If the free, democratic world is NOT able to stop the tyranny, there should be another way of challenging the tyrants: It would be to award another Nobel Peace Prize as a sign of international support for the victims of the Chinese Communist Party, like was the case in the past. Indeed, the world has acted correctly by awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to His Holiness and later to Liu Xiaobo.

 The Uyghur people, who have been suffering the most under the communist regime of Xi Jinping, hope that it is now time to honor a Uyghur, namely Prof. Ilham Tohti, and award him the Nobel Peace Prize.

 Your Holiness’s nomination of Prof. Ilham Tohti for the Nobel Peace Prize 2018 would be tremendously appreciated by all Uyghur people, including those who lost their lives fighting for freedom and justice or who are kept in prison in spite of their peaceful intentions.

Brief an Lecha Wałęsy: Bitte um Friedensnobelpreisnominierung

Dear Mr. President,

As a former journalist of Radio Free Europe, I am a witness and admirer of a person like yourself, who made a significant contribution to the freedom and democracy of the Polish people and who, with a working class background, made his way to become the first democratically elected President of his country. At the same time, I have also witnessed and was delighted when the world acknowledged your courageous service by awarding you the Nobel Peace Prize.

 As you know, the Han Chinese Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mr. Liu Xiao Bo recently died in captivity for advocating freedom and democracy for his people.

 Tragically, the Uyghur Professor Ilham Tohti is condemned to a similiar fate and has been sentenced to life imprisonment for promoting a peaceful co-existence and open dialogue among all ethnic groups in China including the Uyghurs and the Han, and the implementation of the Autonomy Laws enshrined in the constitution of the People's Republic of China.

 Since the social situation in the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang has gotten worse and more explosive in the last few years, a reasonable solution to calm the ethnic tensions so that peace and stability can reign is needed now more than ever. Not only in Xinjiang, but also throughout China and beyond.

 Due to being highly respected by the Uyghurs, knowing the origin of the problems and having already elaborated detailed solutions, Ilham Tohti may be the only person who is able to build a bridge between the ethnic groups and restore peace in Xinjiang.

 The Uyghur people thereby humbly ask whether a notable freedom fighter like yourself would be able to nominate Professor Ilham Tohti for the Nobel Peace Prize 2018.

 We, the members of the "Ilham Tohti Initiative" as well as other Uyghur and Human Rights Organizations will be ready to offer you all the support you may need and kindly ask you to take our request into consideration.

 I would be honored to be given the opportunity to meet you, a man whom I admire and who has taught me to have courage, and ask you to grant me a short audience in Poland, so that I can introduce myself and the plight of the Uyghur people to you in the near future.

Brief an die Bundeskanzlerin anlässlich des G-20-Gipfels in Hamburg:

Sehr geehrte Frau Bundeskanzlerin,

wir sind Ihnen außerordentlich dankbar, dass Sie sich nun schon seit Jahren für die Einhaltung der Menschenrechte in der Welt einsetzen. Anlässlich des G20-Gipfels möchten wir Sie jedoch bitten, dies vor allem in Gesprächen mit der chinesischen Führung noch einmal verstärkt zu tun.

China ist Deutschlands wichtigster Handelspartner, aber die guten Beziehungen sollten sich nicht auf Wirtschaft, Kultur und Panda-Diplomatie beschränken, sondern man sollte auch moralisch auf Augenhöhe stehen. Deutschland schützt in vorbildlicher Weise die Meinungs- und Redefreiheit seiner Bürger und es sollte – und kann aufgrund seines Ansehens in der Welt – auch seine Partner dazu anhalten.

Ein Land, das Menschen wie Liu Xiaobo und Ilham Tohti ins Gefängnis sperrt, muss wissen, dass andere Länder derartige Ungerechtigkeiten verachten. Liu Xiaobo und Ilham Tohti haben nichts verbrochen: Sie haben lediglich Gebrauch von der in der Verfassung ihres Landes festgeschriebenen Redefreiheit gemacht – und sie haben es zum Wohl ihrer Mitbürger getan, nicht für sich selbst.

Ilham Tohti hat sich jahrelang für Verständnis zwischen Han-Chinesen und Uiguren eingesetzt. Er hat konkrete Vorschläge für eine Lösung der immer bedrohlich werdenden ethnischen Spannungen in Xinjiang ausgearbeitet. Dafür wurde er zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt. Außerdem wurde er in das dreitausend Kilometer weit entfernte Gefängnis von Urumchi überstellt, obwohl er in Peking wohnhaft ist und dort seine Familie hat und obwohl laut Gesetz ein Verurteilter immer in einem Gefängnis seines Wohnorts untergebracht werden sollte. Die Entfernung ist für ihn und seine Familie eine zusätzliche Qual, weil sie nur selten vom Besuchsrecht Gebrauch machen können.

Wir bitten Sie deshalb ganz herzlich, auch beim diesjährigen G20-Gipfel auf Einhaltung der Menschrechte zu bestehen und Ilham Tohtis Verurteilung zu überdenken. Liu Xiaobo ist nun freigekommen, weil er todkrank ist. Für Ilham Tohti wäre zumindest eine Verlegung in ein Gefängnis von Peking eine Erleichterung. Und für die Uiguren wäre dies ein wichtiges Zeichen.

Die Situation in Xinjiang macht uns derzeit große Sorgen, da der Druck auf die Bevölkerung derart groteske Formen annimmt, dass die Menschen geradezu in den Widerstand getrieben werden. Die Regierung könnte mit dieser Politik das Gegenteil von dem zu erreichen, was sie erreichen will. Und da Xinjiang ein Kernstück der „Neuen Seidenstraße“ bildet, die ja auch der deutschen und europäischen Wirtschaft Vorteile bringen soll, ist es auch in unserem Interesse, dass dort Frieden herrscht.
